Cross Country Training

Training isn’t just about getting faster — it’s about showing up, pushing through, and becoming the athlete and teammate others can count on.

Newcomers and Incoming Freshman

Novice/ Rookie/ First Timer: There is no set time standard for this group of runners. Team selection is based on coachability, dedication, attitude, motivation, and fitness level. But there is an expectation of being motivated and doing your absolute best. The sooner you get in running shape, the sooner the real fun begins!

Returning Team Members

Sophomores: All returning sophomores must be able to run 1 mile in 5:30 for boys/ for girls 7:30 or faster to make the team.

Upperclassmen: All returning upperclassmen must be able to run 1 mile in 5:20 for boys/ for girls 6:30 or faster to make the team.

Varsity Consideration: Those aspiring to make the varsity team must be a Stotan (a cross between a Stoic and a Spartan) to push one's physical and emotional capabilities beyond the limit! You must be able to run 1 mile in 5:00 for boys/ for girls 5:50 or faster to make the team.

Expectations and Requirements

Joining cross country is a valuable and challenging experience. With patience, consistency, and a team-first mindset, you can have a successful and rewarding first season. Make no mistake — cross country isn’t easy. But the difficulty is what makes it worth it.

Some of our best runners at Mission Viejo had no prior experience when they joined. It’s not about where you start — it’s about how committed you are to improving.

Do you want to make varsity?
Do you want to become a stronger, faster version of yourself?
Either way, it starts with your mindset — and your training. Summer training isn’t optional if you want to be prepared for the season. It sets the foundation for everything to come.

To build a competitive program rooted in work ethic, dedication, and purpose, we’ve adopted Time Standards that must be met prior to the start of the regular season.

Note: Coaches reserve the right to evaluate or release athletes based on more than just time standards. Every runner is evaluated on attitude, citizenship, work ethic, integrity, and coachability — because talent alone doesn’t make a great teammate.

Altitude Training Camp

Altitude Camp is designed as a bonding and team-building experience to focus as a team. An invitation is based on time trials, commitment, and attitude.

This year Altitude Camp will be limited to Varsity level athletes. The training location will be at Big Bear. July 19th-July 25th. Payment must be paid before we go to camp.
